Zero-click search

A zero-click search is one that ends without the user clicking on any web result, either because the answer appears directly on the results page or because they give up or change their query.

What causes it

  • Featured snippets that answer the question on the results page itself.
  • Knowledge panels, calculators, converters, weather, opening hours.
  • AI-generated summaries, such as Google's AI Overviews, launched in the United States in May 2024 and later expanded to other countries.
  • Reformulated searches: the user doesn't find what they want and tries another query.

What the data says

A SparkToro study based on Datos clickstream panel data (2024) estimated that around 58.5% of Google searches in the United States and 59.7% in the European Union ended with no click at all. The share varies a lot by query type: it's much higher for simple informational queries than for commercial ones.

What to do in B2B tech companies

  • Prioritize commercial and transactional queries, where users need to visit the website to compare, see pricing or book a demo.
  • Build the brand: even without a click, appearing as a source in the answer creates recognition.
  • Create content that can't be summarized in one line: proprietary data, tools, templates, case studies, opinions with a point of view.
  • Use structured data so search engines understand each page properly.
  • Measure beyond visits: impressions and positions in Search Console, branded search trends and assisted conversions.
